We have the unique distinction of being the firm with the longest experience of the Ugandan firms in the Oil & Gas sector having provided legal services to the operator in 3 blocks in the Albertine Graben before and after the discovery of oil in Uganda. K&K has also provided legal services to several major service providers in the Oil & Gas industry for over 15 years.

The firm provided transaction advisory services in the farm down of Block 1 and 3A in the Albertine Graben, legal support in the review of Field Development Plans and Applications for production licenses. We have provided legal guidance on the acquisition of different permits and licenses necessitated by the exploration activity; cost approvals; national content compliance; management of employment and labour relations; compensation claims for land surface rights; compensation claims for injury and tort; Environment, Health and Safety Regulation and Taxation.

The firm also served on the Technical Committee of the Uganda National Bureau of Standards that developed standards in Oil and Gas management. The firm has been very active and has distinguished itself in the nascent oil and gas sector in Uganda and as a result, its founding partner, Kiryowa Kiwanuka was appointed in 2015 to fill the only legal slot on the 7 member inaugural board of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda.

The firm also has the unique distinction of actively serving on both panels of the national electricity generation and the electricity transmission entities (Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited and Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited). The firm has advised the electricity companies on major national infrastructure projects currently being implemented including the 600MW Karuma HPP and 183MW Isimba HPP and the associated transmission lines.

The firm has also provided legal services to Independent Power Producers in negotiation of Power Purchase Agreements, Investment Agreements, Generation Licenses and implementation of Resettlement Action Plans.
